How To Decorate Simple Valentine's Day Cookies With Royal Icing

This year I decided to keep things simple with my Valentine's Day cookies by using the wet on wet technique. This technique involves only flood consistency royal icing, which means less mixing (yay!). Watch the video tutorial on how to decorate simple valentine's day cookies with royal icing below!

Plate of valentine's day cookies decorated in pink, white, and red royal icing with polka dots, hearts, lips, and herringbone designs.

Here's what you'll need to create these cookies.

These supplies can be found in my Amazon Store unless otherwise noted.

Colors*

  • Red = Americolor tulip red + burgundy + a touch of black
  • White = a touch of Wilton golden yellow
  • Pink = Wilton aster mauve from the garden tone set

*UPDATE: Since I first wrote this post in 2014, Wilton has come out with their Color Right set, which I now use regularly.

Instructions

  1. Mix 3 colors of flood consistency royal icing: Pink, white, and red.
  2. Ice a heart-shaped cookie with pink flood consistency royal icing and a decorating tip 2.
  3. Use a scribe tool to help evenly distribute the icing.
  4. Pipe dots of white flood consistency royal icing with a decorating tip 2 while the pink icing is still wet.
  5. To make hearts, ice the cookie with pink icing and pipe dots of red.
  6. Drag the scribe tool through the dots to create hearts while the icing is still wet.
  7. Make a marbled design by piping stripes of white and pink flood consistency icing in wet red royal icing.
  8. Drag the scribe tool up and down through the lines to create a marbled effect.
  9. To make lips, pipe ovals of red flood consistency icing in wet white icing.
  10. Use the scribe tool to shape the ovals into lips.
  11. Allow the icing to dry completely (6-8 hours) before handling the cookies.
