I've been piping more lettering on my cookies lately than I ever have in the past, and my 44th birthday cookies from this year gave me the final push I needed to get a projector! Many of you have asked me over the years about projectors for cookie decorating with royal icing, and I'm thrilled to finally be able to share with you how to use a projector to decorate cookies!
The Happy Halloween template, my recipes, and all of my cookie decorating tutorials are available to members of the Cookie Art Club.

Best Projector For Cookie Decorating
Working with a projector is still relatively new to me, but I've been loving the Kodak Luma 75 Portable Projector. I chose this one because it's one of the more inexpensive options available and it comes from Kodak, which I think of as a reputable company.
Like any product online, the reviews are mixed, so I just gave it a shot and so far this projector has been great. Watch the video to see how to use it!
Here's what you'll need to write on cookies with a projector
These supplies are available in my Amazon or Walmart Store unless otherwise noted. These are affiliate links.
- Iced cookie, completely dry
- Medium consistency royal icing in a tipless decorating bag
- Bag tie or rubber band
- Scribe tool
- Happy Halloween template on a computer, phone, or tablet
- Kodak Mini Portable Projector or similar projector (If you don’t have one, see my tutorial on how to pipe lettering without a projector)
- HDMI to USB-C cable (this came with the Kodak projector)
- Tabletop tripod (I have this one from B&H Photo)
What I learned about how to use a projector to decorate cookies
- The settings on your computer, phone, or tablet should prevent the device from going to sleep while you’re working. My laptop screen went to sleep in the middle of my project and I had to reset the size when it came back on.
- The battery lasted a little under two hours. I haven’t tried using the projector while plugged into a power source.
- After the initial setup, it makes the process of piping lettering go much faster than transferring the template onto each cookie. You’ll still need to practice keeping your hand steady and changing the pressure on the bag as you pipe the letters.
