One of my favorite things about these cookies, aside from the fact that they depict my favorite summer activity, is that they are made with natural food coloring! I've been using natural food coloring from The Sugar Art since they launched this new line a few months ago and I don't see any reason to go back to artificial colors.
The black icing is made with a combination of King Arthur Baking Company's Black Cocoa Powder and The Sugar Art's Slate natural food coloring. I recently made a batch of black royal icing using only the cocoa powder, but the fat from the cocoa powder makes the icing dry with a wavy texture. It's a pretty cool look, but for a smooth finish on your royal icing, it's best to use a little bit of the cocoa powder mixed with the natural food coloring.
The full color mixing instructions and recipes are included with the tutorial in the Cookie Art Club.

In addition to adding sparkling sugar to these camping cookies for my Starry Night inspired sky, I used King Arthur Baking Company's Swedish Pearl Sugar to make asteroids in the galaxy cookies.
Ever since I worked on these Lord of the Rings wedding cookies, I've been enjoying using a variety of shapes for my cookie sets. This time, I used 3 different plaque shapes and a small hexagon shaped cookie cutter. The largest of the 3 plaques was given to me as a gift and has been part of my collection for a long time. The other two plaques are by Ann Clark Cookie Cutters and they are linked in my favorite cookie decorating supplies.
