Lettering On Cookies & Pastel Galaxy Cookie Tutorial (Cookie Club Premium Tutorial)

pastel galaxy cookie

This pastel galaxy cookie is part of Wilton Cake Decorating’s Cakegram project to help spread positive messages with sweets! I used the opportunity to try out this tracing tool from Amazon to help me with the lettering on the cookies (find it here on Amazon). Take a look at the video tutorial to see how this tool works!

Tips for lettering on cookies

✔️Use medium consistency icing. Medium consistency icing is thin enough that it will come out of the tip easily, but not so thin that it will lose its shape. Learn more about icing consistency in my Ultimate Guide To Royal Icing.

✔️Use a good quality decorating tip. I love the PME size 1.5 tip for lettering and other small details. There is no detectable seam inside, which means that your icing is less likely to do that annoying curling thing when you pipe.

✔️Trace the design. If you don’t already have a projector and you don’t want to go out and buy a new tool, check out my tissue paper method to learn how to transfer a design onto your cookie with an edible ink marker and a piece of tissue paper. See below for my notes on the tracing tool that I used in this tutorial.

✔️Practice on paper first. When writing on cookies it’s rare that I get it right the first time around. I always pipe the letters a few times on paper first, especially if I’m piping freehand.

✔️Play around with piping pressure. Some parts of the letters require very little pressure on the bag. I barely put any pressure on the bag and just drag the tip across the surface to get those super thin lines. You can go over the lines again with increased pressure if you want to thicken the lines.

✔️Learn “fauxligraphy”. I follow a couple of calligraphers on Instagram who have great tips on how to create calligraphy-like lettering without special tools. These tips apply to lettering on cookies, too! One of my favorites is Laura Hooper Calilligraphy.
