Hand Painted Cat Portrait Cookie With Royal Icing

A cookie decorated to look like a portrait of a cake in a picture frame. The cookie frame is embellished with a gold background and filigree details around the edge. The cookie is surrounded by a decorating bag filled with icing, food coloring bottles, a paint palette, and a paint brush.

A friend of mine recently requested a custom cookie portrait of her cat for her wife's birthday cake. I love making cakes for friends and family and I was so excited to create this one for her!

You can create your own template of your pet by printing a photo of them and cutting it out. To cut the cookie, place the template on a chilled sheet of cookie dough and cut around it with a paring knife.

The plaque shape that I used for the frame was also cut by hand. This template is available to my Cookie Art Club members.

Here's the completed cake! I used a carrot cake recipe (the birthday girl's favorite!) from Simply Recipes and decorated it with cream cheese frosting (the border is piped with a Wilton 1M tip). Take a look at my cookie pop tutorial to see how I turned this cookie into a cake topper.
