I made these rainbow watercolor heart cookies for my friends who got married over the summer, but I saved the tutorial until now because they are perfect for Valentine’s Day!

Painting on cookies is easier than you might think. You’ll need food coloring and alcohol or any flavor extract such as vanilla, lemon, or almond. Alcohol or flavored extracts are used for painting on royal icing because they evaporate very quickly, which means that the liquid won’t dissolve the icing as you are applying the paint.
I used Sweet Sugarbelle’s heart cookie cutter from this set to make these cookies. The 3.25″ heart from Ann Clark Cookie Cutters would also work well for this design.
Before you paint, you’ll want to make sure that your royal icing is just right. Icing that has been over-mixed or is too thin will absorb the paint and it will look splotchy. Take a look at my ultimate guide to royal icing.
