Just like these cookies, The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze is sweet, spooky, and so much fun! As a Hudson Valley resident, I am happy to help Historic Hudson Valley spread the word about this electrifying event which features over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins! Watch the time lapse video below to see how I decorated these glowing Jack O'Lantern cookies:
Supplies:
- Roll-out cookie dough (use your favorite recipe or get mine in the tutorial shop)
- Paring knife to cut out cookies
- Edible ink marker to draw the faces and sections before icing
- Flood consistency royal icing for the base layer of icing on all of the cookies
- Medium consistency royal icing for the text
- Small decorating bags
- Decorating tip 2
- Scribe tool
- Gel paste colors: Blue, Pink, Yellow, Orange from the Wilton Color Right Set
- Alcohol or liquid extract for painting (why? Read this)
- Brushes
- Palette or small dishes for mixing edible paint

Which color did you brush on in dust? These are lovely! Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you, Terri! I used liquid-gel food coloring from the Wilton Color Right set. Orange and yellow for the cut-outs and a mixture of blue and pink for the shading on the pumpkin 🙂
Hi Amber,
These are awesome! I’m going to be making pumpkin cookies myself and these are inspiring:) how do you paint with gel coloring? Do you mix anything with the gel? Or just use it as is? Thank you!!!
Thank you, Gina! I mix the gel with vodka. You can read more about it in this post about gold royal icing. The same applies when using any type of food coloring: https://www.sweetambs.com/tutorial/gold-royal-icing/
