4th of July Cookie Tutorial
I decided to do things a little differently with this design. I left a lot of exposed cookie around the star in order to add to the rustic look of it. I also brushed on some color dust at the end to add to its antique feel. Read on for the step by step tutorial. Happy 4th of July! Once your cookies are baked and cooled, trace a star cutter using an edible ink marker onto the surface of the cookie. Then, draw a wavy flag image inside the star. Drawing the flag wavy makes it so that you don’t have to worry about piping super straight lines. It’s similar to what I did on the picnic cookie tutorial. This color palette is the same one I used for the nautical cookies. I mixed a little bit of black into the red and into the blue to give the colors a more vintage feel. The gold is done with a brown icing base. More on gold icing later. Using stiff consistency brown icing and a tip 2, outline the star. Then, with flood consistency icing and a tip 1, fill in the blue area. Immediately add dots of white flood consistency icing with a tip 1. Fill in the red stripes, also using a tip 1 and flood consistency icing. Immediately fill in the white stripes. Gently tap the cookie a few times on your work surface to smooth out the icing. Allow the icing to dry 8-12 hours before moving on to the next step. Once the icing is dry, use a soft round brush to add brown color dust to the surface. Start from the edges and brush toward the center. This is the first time I’d tried Wilton’s new line of color dusts. I think it turned out a little too red, but it still did the trick. Wilton is one of the only companies I know of that make FDA approved pearl dusts and color dusts. Most of the others that are available on the market are labeled non toxic, but also non edible, so they’re just meant for use on decorations that won’t be consumed, such as gum paste flowers. NY Cake just came out with a line of FDA approved dusts, which I haven’t had a chance to try yet. After dusting the star with the color dust, mix some gold pearl dust with a few drops of alcohol or flavored extract to form a paint and apply it to the brown outline of the star. Read this post for more information on painting with gold. Allow the paint to dry for another 20-30 minutes before handling the cookie. Happy 4th of July!
