5 Easy Decorated Cookies For Beginners

Going from one child to two has been a huge change to say the least! After getting the kids out the door in the morning and then taking several breaks a day for pumping, my time to get work done is even more limited than it was before.

Now that I’m a mom of two little ones, I made my first video since returning from maternity leave one that any busy person can appreciate – 5 easy decorated cookies for beginners. All of these cookie designs use only one icing consistency, which means less mixing and less to clean up!

The marbled hexagon cookies are my favorite of the bunch – not only because of how they look, but because they are made using the leftover icing from the other cookies! Watch the video and take a look at the instructions below to learn how to make these 5 easy decorated cookies.

Before you begin, make sure to take a look at my blog post about icing consistency. It’s really important that your icing is not too thick and not too thin. If you practice getting the right icing consistency it will save a lot of frustration when you start decorating.

Supplies

  1. Cookie dough (I used my Orange Vanilla Cardamom recipe from my Cookie Art Club)
  2. Star cookie cutter, round cookie cutter, hexagon cookie cutter
  3. Flood consistency royal icing in white, pink, teal, purple, and blue.
  4. Icing bags, couplers, and tip 3
  5. Two-in-one tool
  6. Glass measuring cup or similar container for pouring marbled icing
  7. Parchment-lined baking sheet
  8. Cooling grid

Instructions

  1. Prepare the royal icing according to the instructions on the package.
  2. Add water to thin the icing to flood consistency
  3. Separate the icing into smaller containers and add color.
  4. Place the icing into decorating bags fitted with number 3 tips.
  5. To make the starburst design, ice a round cookie with concentric circles in different colors.
  6. Use the two-in-one tool to drag the icing from the center out, then from the outside toward the center.
  7. To make the flower, ice the outside of the cookie in any color and ice a smaller circle inside in a different color.
  8. Use the two-in-one tool to drag the icing from the outside toward the center, creating petals.
  9. Pipe two more layers of a smaller color inside the petals and drag the two-in-one tool through the petals starting from the center and moving out toward the edge of the cookie.
  10. To make the hearts, ice a round cookie in any color.
  11. Pipe dots with a different color and drag the two-in-one tool through each dot to create a heart shape (make sure to wipe the icing off of the tool in between each heart).
  12. To make the galaxy star, ice the cookie with blue, pink, purple, and white icing.
  13. Use the two-in-one tool to swirl the colors together.
  14. Pipe two dots with the white icing and use the two-in-one tool to drag the icing to 8 points (make sure to wipe the icing off of the tool in between each point of the star).
  15. Pipe smaller white dots all over the surface of the icing.
  16. Empty the leftover icing into a measuring cup or any small container.
  17. Place the cookies on a cooling grid over a parchment-lined tray.
  18. Gently stir the icing, but make sure to not blend the colors too much.
  19. Pour the icing over the cookies.
  20. Move the cookies to a clean sheet of parchment to dry.
