Downton Abbey Inspired Cookies

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to make Downton Abbey inspired cookies! My mom and I saw the movie last weekend and it was every bit as wonderful as I’d imagined.

I’ve always been drawn to the maid’s aprons in the show and brush embroidery is the perfect technique for those lacy details on these cookies. I figured since I was making a maid cookie, I’d make a butler cookie to go with it!

Rather than make the cookies shaped like the costumes, I thought it would be neat to use a plaque instead. This is my Small Fanciful Plaque that I created in partnership with Ann Clark Cookie Cutters.

Supply List

These products can be found in my Amazon Store unless otherwise noted

  • Cookie dough (use your favorite or get my recipe in the Cookie Art Club)
  • Small Fanciful Plaque cookie cutter
  • Flood consistency royal icing in black and white
  • Stiff consistency royal icing in white
  • 12″ decorating bags
  • Bag ties
  • Couplers
  • Decorating tips 1 and 2
  • Two-in-one tool
  • Thin brush
  • Edible dust in black, black pearl, and gold
  • Alcohol or any flavor extract – Alcohol or flavored extracts are used for painting on royal icing because they evaporate very quickly, which means that the liquid won’t dissolve the icing as you are applying the paint.
  • Palette or small dishes for mixing paint

Instructions

  1. Begin by icing a plaque-shaped cookie with flood consistency royal icing and a decorating tip 2.
  2. Use a scribe tool to help shape the icing. Allow the icing to dry for 1 hour.
  3. Pipe the lapels and use the scribe tool to help shape the icing. Allow the icing to dry completely.
  4. Add vodka or any flavor extract to edible dusts in black, black pearl, and gold.
  5. Use a thin brush to paint the details on the icing.
  6. Pipe a bowtie with medium consistency royal icing and a decorating tip 1.
  7. Links to these products can be found on my blog at SweetAmbs.com
  8. Use the scribe tool to help shape the icing.
  9. Use stiff consistency royal icing and a decorating tip 1 for the details on the apron.
  10. Brush the icing to create lace.

Pin this project for later!
